Many of you have had meetings, taken classes or just popped into the Lucy Avalos Community Center at Burke-Ham Park. The Lynwood City Council even held one of their meetings there last year before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Do you know who Lucy Avalos was and why the community center was named after her?
Lynwood Director of Recreation and Community Services wrote this beautiful piece about Ms. Avalos for the grand opening of the community center:
Luz Maria “Lucy” Avalos left a legacy of being an unwavering community champion through her tireless volunteer work and her renowned catering services. Through her love of community and food, Mrs. Avalos was celebrated for her passion of all things Lynwood and for her advocacy of community programs. Over the course of 30+ years as a Lynwood resident, Mrs. Avalos provided invaluable support to private and public community programs for youth, veterans, seniors and the general community alike. Her generosity made a direct and significant impact on the lives of residents and ensured the success of countless charitable causes.
Thank you to Ms. Avalos for being such an important part of Lynwood’s history.
