“We are our brother’s keeper, we have to give back, we have to look out for one another.” Those are the words by which Barbara Battle lives. A resident of Lynwood since 1974, Ms. Battle is a fixture in the City, the Lynwood Unified School District and many local civic organizations.
She is currently on the Personnel Commission of LUSD. Her experience as a retired elementary school teacher and longtime Sunday school teacher (since she was 13 years old) gives her the resources to carefully consider the school district community, employees and the needs of LUSD families. Her added experience as Examination Division Branch Chief and District Director’s Representative for the Internal Revenue Service has led her to many leadership roles in the community. She is the current President of the Lynwood Rotary Club, President of the Selective Service Board, on the City of Lynwood Senior Advisory Council, Religion Coordinator at St. Philip Neri and a delegate to the California Democratic Party. She is also a member of the NAACP, National Association of Female Executives, the National Catholic Educational Association and the Carson African American Club.
She is a certified Catechist, teaches religion in the CCD Program at St. Philip Neri and offers her time to train altar servers for Sunday mass. She has two adult children who both grew up and went to school in Lynwood. Ms. Battle not only loves to be involved with the community, she says it’s an important part of her life, “God has given us so much that we have to share.”
