The City of Lynwood has been selected as a Beacon Spotlight Award Winner by the Institute for Local Government for its work toward addressing climate change, promoting energy efficiency and creating more sustainable communities. Lynwood will receive the Silver Level Award for a nine percent agency energy savings.
The City of Lynwood previously earned a gold level award in Sustainability Best Practices Activities in 2017 and a platinum level in 2018. The City has been recognized for the following:
Activities included replacing 40 new traffic signals with LED safety lights, preparing and adopting an Energy Action Plan and participating in Southern California Edison’s non-residential Direct Install Program for LED lighting retrofits at seven City facilities.

Activities included Installing a new cloud-based supervisory control system and data acquisition system to allow staff to digitally monitor well sites, booster pumps and reservoir efficiency for the entire water system, adopting a Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance and installing a reclaimed water system for irrigation for Burke-Ham park and the Lucy Avalos Community Center.

Activities included the City Hall Annex development featuring drought tolerant landscaping, an infiltration chamber, LED light fixtures and motion sensors, high-efficiency HVAC units and low emissivity window film, building the Lucy Avalos Community Center with LEED-Gold certification standards, and upgrading Bateman Hall with a new white roof and drainage spouts.

Activities included hosting a citywide annual Spring Cleanup Event, setting printer settings on all printers and copier machines to print double-sided, and stenciling and cleaning 600 catch basins with “No Dumping, This Drains to the Ocean” logo.

Activities included considering life cycle pricing when evaluating purchase options, encouraging purchasing from local vendors with competitive pricing, and, when possible, using rubberized asphalt concrete for street maintenance.

Activities included installing new bicycle racks at Lucy Avalos Community Center to encourage biking to events, installing six new solar-powered flashing stop lights throughout the City, and purchasing six electric vehicles for high vehicle dependent staff.

Activities included partnering with the Lynwood Unified School District to provide educational tours of the City’s public transportation, adopting the Lynwood Transit Area Specific Plan focusing on creating transit-oriented communities around the Metro Green Line Station, and providing local transportation for residents linking to shopping centers, train stations and other public transportation services.

Activities included constructing and opening the 5.25-acre Ricardo Lara Linear Park, installing pedestrian safety equipment and extending curbs at various school intersections, and providing 46 acres of parks to residents.

Activities included partnering with Southern California Edison and TreePeople to plant 20 trees at Burke-Ham Park, installing eight new electric charging stations for residents, and organizing the Community Garden Clean-up at the Ricardo Lara Linear Park.

Activities included holding an event in honor of Earth Day, including educational materials and booths at National Night Out Events, and participating as a member of the Los Angeles Regional Agency (LARA), which provides reusable bags, water bottles and items made from recycled materials at City events.
The City of Lynwood will receive the award and be recognized at a ceremony held during the League of California Cities’ Annual Conference in October.
